Overview
This sample application demonstrates how to create a fully web-enabled and intelligent weather data collection solution. It is built on a Digi Connect ME® embedded module that is connected to a basic and cost-effective weather instrument equipped with a temperature sensor to measure the current temperature and a cup anemometer with integrated wind vane to determine wind speed and direction. The weather instrument is mounted on the roof of the Digi corporate headquarters in Minnetonka, MN, USA.

Click the link below to access live weather information through your web browser.

You can also obtain read-only access to the administration pages of the demo by logging in as user "demo" with password "demo."
The number of users that are allowed to access the live demo at the same time is limited. If you should not be able to view the demo at this time, please try again later.
Design and Implementation
The custom embedded NET+OS application running on the Digi Connect ME/Wi-ME module was created using the Digi JumpStart Kit for NET+OS and collects environmental data through the weather instrument's 1-Wire interface. The information is then made available to web browsers by an integrated web server, which also allows the launch of a custom Java applet to visualize the data through a graphical user interface. The Java applet receives the weather data updates through a simple protocol that is based on standard UDP communication.
As the diagram above shows, the 1-Wire connection coming from the weather instrument is converted to RS-232 to feed directly to a standard Digi Connect ME/Wi-ME development board, which is used as a simple carrier board platform.
Further hardware integration is possible by designing a discrete solution with native 1-Wire interface components. The flexibility and simplicity of the 1-Wire bus also allows you to integrate additional inexpensive sensors, like barometric pressure, precipitation or humidity, without the need for external power supplies.
The embedded software and the Java applet can also be modified to offer additional functionality such as the logging and charting of historical data or the integration of additional sensor elements.
Developers Only
Please note that you need a Digi JumpStart Kit for NET+OS to compile the NET+OS portion of the application. Contact your local Digi sales office or distributor for information on how and where to purchase it.
