Access and Maintain Medical Devices

A manufacturer of high volume blood coagulation analyzers needed a way to provide remote monitoring and support of their lab devices located in hospitals throughout the U.S. and Europe. The technical support team is required to respond to issues within 24 hours. If the problem cannot be resolved over the phone, a support technician must travel onsite since the hospitals do not grant access to their networks for remote troubleshooting. Not only is this extensive traveling costly and time-consuming, but it can result in up to 24 hours of downtime at hospital labs.

The manufacturer implemented cellular technology to gain instant access to remote serial devices. The Digi Connect WAN Ethernet-to-cellular router is connected directly to the blood analyzer’s RS-232 serial maintenance port – connecting to the hospital’s network is not necessary. It utilizes GSM (GPRS/EDGE) or CDMA (1xRTT) cellular networks for remote wireless device connectivity, with speeds up to 120 Kbps. Now, technicians have immediate access to each blood analyzer within minutes of the problem being reported. They are able to troubleshoot via the device’s maintenance port as the onsite lab staff explains the issue over the phone, enabling the technicians to resolve the issue immediately.

Implementing the Digi Connect WAN cellular solution resulted in four key benefits for this manufacturer:

  • Frequent travel is eliminated, saving time and money
  • Many sites can be supported quickly by a single technician
  • Time between support call and resolution is drastically reduced

The Digi Connect WAN enabled this blood analyzer manufacturer to save time and money by providing access to remote devices, thereby eliminating onsite hospital visits.
