Rabbit Helps to Control Live Audio Remotely

There is nothing like the thrill of a live event – the anticipation of the show, the excitement of the audience, the energy of the performance. The quality and success of an event can be affected by many tangible and intangible factors. Managing the tangible variables, like lights and sound, allows performers, promoters and producers to maximize their investment and ensure the audience the best possible live experience.

Elby Designs embeds the RCM4010 module into their Be-Station audio and lighting interface. The Be-Station enables reliable wireless control of audio and lighting equipment, minimizing the costs, as well as the risks of accident or failure associated with long cable runs. Acting as a communication hub, the Be-Station provides gateway connectivity between RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, MIDI, Ethernet and Bluetooth. Mixing desks, amplifiers, lighting banks and other devices are connected to the Be-Station using MIDI or serial connections.

“Rabbit’s RCM4010 was chosen as the controller for this project as it afforded us with a suitable number of serial ports and digital I/O as well as integrating Ethernet connectivity,” Explained Laurie Biddulph of Elby Designs.

Using a Bluetooth-enabled PDA and Elby Designs’ Be-Mix software, technicians can access a virtual mixing console, enabling remote wireless control of sound and light from anywhere within range of the Be-Station. Audio and lighting commands are sent from the PDA and received by the interface. The RCM4010 RabbitCore module embedded into the Be-Station analyzes, modifies and sends these commands to the secondary connection.

“The RabbitCore module is used as the gateway controller and allows the user to select which ports are to be connected. Then the module passes the data between the selected ports,” Biddulph continued.

The flexible RabbitCore RCM4010 coupled with the Dynamic C® integrated development environment enable efficient integration of hardware and software and facilitate rapid design and development turn-around. The ease-of-use and low-cost make Rabbit’s RCM4010 the perfect solution for Laurie Biddulph and allowed Elby Designs to offer a cost-effective alternative to wired audio and lighting control.
