Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) systems offer an effective means of collecting video surveillance data. A corporation with a large network of CCTV systems in place wanted to upgrade its stationary security cameras to remotely controllable cameras. Since the existing cameras were already installed and wired for video, the company opted to remount the cameras to Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ) controllers, which may be accessed via serial connection from a central control station. However, running additional communication lines for the PTZ controllers was not an option because of wiring costs.
Leveraging their 802.11b wireless Local Area Network (LAN), the company utilized Digi Connect® Wi-SP wireless device servers to convert the PTZ controllers from serial to Wi-Fi. Key benefits include:
- Fast deployment using existing wireless LAN
- Cost-effective - no additional wiring is needed
- Compact design and mounting tabs mean easy integration with the CCTV system
- Secure data transfer via strong encryption and authentication services, which are WPA2/802.11i compliant
Implementing the Digi Connect Wi-SP enabled the corporation to minimize the costs of its CCTV upgrade by utilizing existing cameras and their Wi-Fi network. The rollout was quick since they did not have to schedule additional wiring.
