Cellular Modem vs. Digi Cellular Gateways
Although the Digi Connect® WAN family products are are able to perform most functions of a cellular modem, they actually
do much more. Digi Connect WAN family products are intelligent gateways with a full TCP/IP stack and embedded
Real Time Operating System (RTOS) which allow remote devices and networks to be natively integrated with IP devices and
applications across high-speed digital cellular networks.
Demystifying 802.15.4 and ZigBee - new
Creating wireless networks can be done using a variety of RF protocols. Some protocols are
proprietary to individual vendors, and others are industry standards. This white paper explores the ZigBee
protocol industry standard for data transmission, and the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol on which it was built.
This paper defines the frequencies used, the bandwidth it occupies, and networking features unique to
each of these protocols and explore the features they were designed to use.
Efficient Data Transfer over Cellular Networks
This white paper explores different criteria important to implementing data communications over cellular
networks to communicate with remote devices in the field.
Mixing Multiple Wireless Technologies - new
This paper explores how to mix different wireless technologies, including cellular, Wi-Fi®/802.11,
WiMAX™/802.16, Bluetooth®, ZigBee®/802.15.4 and proprietary wireless to form a successful commercial
or industrial deployment.
Remote Wireless Networking 101
The purpose of this document is to provide an overview of remote wireless data communications over GSM and CDMA networks.
Untangling the Mesh - new
This paper is based on a presentation titled "What a Mesh!" given by Joel Young at Embedded Systems
Conference Silicon Valley 2008. The paper discusses discusses mesh networks, including wireless network
basics, the criteria for evaluating different wireless mesh networking technologies, an overview of mesh
related technologies, and an evaluation of the technologies.
Wireless Mesh Networking: ZigBee® vs. DigiMesh™ - new
Mesh networking is a powerful way to route data. Range is extended by allowing data to hop
node to node and reliability is increased by “self healing,” the ability to create alternate paths
when one node fails or a connection is lost.
One popular mesh networking protocol is ZigBee, which is specifically designed for low-data rate, low-power applications. Digi International offers several products based on ZigBee. Additionally, Digi has developed an alternate mesh protocol named DigiMesh. Both ZigBee and DigiMesh offer unique advantages important to different applications, and this paper discusses those advantages.
Wireless Persistent Connections
To manage devices over a network, embedded software engineers must build products using a variety
of communications protocols, so their network-attached applications meet the needs of their customers.
However, as methods of network communications vary, today’s time-consuming methods for implementing
variables separately for each protocol must change. These methods hinder product development and
oppose the “future-proofing” of applications. To meet embedded engineering needs, Digi offers
NET+Works with an Integrated Systems Architecture, which uses an embedded database to allow
variable implementation or changes to be reflected in all deployed protocols. The result is greater
programming ease and flexibility, and faster application development.
