Digi International Brings Wireless Capabilities to Arrow Electronics Semi‐Autonomous Motorcar

Motorcar Modified for Individuals With Quadriplegia Showcased at the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma

MINNETONKA, Minn., Sept. 2, 2015 – Digi International®, (NASDAQ: DGII, www.digi.com), the M2M solutions expert, today announced that the Digi TransPort® WR44 cellular router has been incorporated into the design of the Arrow Electronics Semi-Autonomous Motorcar (SAM), the signature social venture of Arrow Electronics.

The SAM Project is an innovative project in which a 2014 Corvette C7 Stingray car has been modified with integrated advanced electronics and a human‐to‐machine interface so a qualified quadriplegic driver can safely operate it under racetrack conditions.

Located in the trunk, the Digi TransPort WR44 cellular router is an all-in-one mobile communications solution featuring enterprise-class routing, security and firewall. As part of the SAM Project, the router is used as a 4G LTE gateway for data collection and as a VPN server to allow project designers to dial into the car’s command/control network. Data collection over 4G LTE allows the team to have near real-time visibility to the car’s performance.

At the 2015 IndyCar GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma, which took place August 28-30, former IndyCar driver and current Verizon IndyCar Series Team owner, Sam Schmidt showcased the car’s capabilities in a demonstration lap on Sonoma’s 2.52-mile road course prior the start of the Grand Prix. Schmidt has been paralyzed and unable to use his arms and legs since a racing accident in 2000. Schmidt is able to steer, accelerate and brake using only his head.

Following the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma, the SAM car will be brought to events for public inspiration and education, disabled community awareness and business development opportunities. The project also supports Conquer Paralysis Now, Schmidt’s foundation dedicated to finding a cure for paralysis.
