Digi International Brings Wireless Innovation to Public Transit

Customers Rely on Digi M2M Technology to Improve Safety, Route Performance and Passenger Experience

MINNETONKA, Minn., June 30, 2015 – Digi International®, (NASDAQ: DGII, www.digi.com), the M2M solutions expert, today highlighted how its solutions are positively impacting the public transit industry. Recognized as an innovator, Digi has been a driver of bringing purpose-built, mission-critical M2M solutions to the market for nearly 30 years. In public transit, Digi solutions are enabling new levels of operational efficiency and customer satisfaction through real-time diagnostics, improved route performance, optimized safety and security, and enhanced rider experience.
Key examples of Digi International implementations include:
SEPTA:  The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is the nation’s sixth-largest public transportation system and the largest in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  The system encompasses approximately 2,200 square miles and serves more than 500,000 customers daily with bus, subway, high speed rail, trolley, regional rail and paratransit vehicles. Digi solutions are an integral component of SEPTA vehicles’ Positive Train Control (PTC) Communications System. Specifically, PTC is a set of highly advanced technologies designed to automatically slow or even stop a train under certain conditions, as mandated by Congress in the Rail Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (RSIA). With Digi technologies, SEPTA’s PTC Communications System keeps all locomotives and vehicles connected, relaying PTC data messages and enabling system maintenance, configuration and network management.
Visalia Transit: Located in Visalia California, with approximately 128,000 residents, Visalia Transit selected Digi to achieve greater levels of service and security as part of its upgrades to take advantage of 4G networks. Digi’s wireless devices affect nearly every aspect of operations including real-time fleet tracking, currency tracking and remote video access.  Additionally, Digi helped to enable offering free Wi-Fi for riders, leading to higher commuter satisfaction.
EMTEST: Located in Eastern Europe, EMTEST provides integrated solutions for public transportation, freight transportation, smartcard systems and electronic equipment production. Specifically, EMTEST’s EMLINES system offers a comprehensive solution to a range of public transport systems, including fare collection, passenger information and fleet control. EMTEST uses Digi as the technological platform for its state-of-the-art, on-board unit that serves as the main control for an entire vehicle system, spanning ticket sales and control, fleet control and deployment, route information, arrival times, traffic monitoring and transfer information. It also offers secure remote management and Web services capabilities through the cloud.
OEM Technology Solutions: Based in Sydney, OEM Technology Solutions is Australia’s leading innovative high technology provider of wireless subsystem control and monitoring solutions to the global transportation industry, serving more than 25,000 systems in rail cars in major cities around the world. OEM Technology Solutions turned to Digi to wirelessly enable its products to allow vendors and rail operators to gather critical information remotely, including timetable information, train location, train performance metrics, and equipment status that encompass video, images, alarms and events. Digi's products allow OEM Technology Solutions to connect controllers to the Internet wirelessly and help train operators limit downtime and improve efficiency. In addition to enabling the transmission of valuable train data, Digi delivers on-board Internet access for passengers, enhancing the customer experience.
According to the American Public Transportation Association, Americans took 10.8 billion trips on public transportation in 2014, which is the highest annual public transit ridership number in 58 years.
“Public transit has been experiencing increased ridership for a number of years now, and with that comes increased pressure for higher levels of operational efficiencies and customer satisfaction,” said Jeff Liebl, vice president and chief marketing officer, Digi International. “With the advances in wireless infrastructure, it’s only natural for public transit authorities and companies to be looking to leverage wireless to achieve the mission-critical aspects of their operations. At Digi, our goal is to be a leader in helping to achieve those objectives.”
