The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 48 million food borne illness cases occur in the United States every year. At least 128,000 Americans are hospitalized, and 3,000 die after consuming contaminated food. That means about 1 in 6 Americans will suffer from a food borne illness this year.
With the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) passing in January 2011, the focus has shifted more towards preventing outbreak, rather than responding to one. Despite this act being put into law these majors outbreaks still occurred in 2011.
