LTE-M and AT&T IoT Data Plan = no SMS Text ability
0
votes
I purchased a DIGI LTE-M module and subscribed to a AT&T data plan. I can connect and get a reply from the echo server. I can not send SMS text messages. AT&T says their IoT data plan does not support SMS Text messages. I get an error message. Anyone else had this experience? All I want to do is be able to send a SMS Text from my device to a cell phone. Would a DIGI LTE device work with an AT&T LTE North America data plan work? I would be curious if anyone has gotten the SMS example code to work with a LTE-M module with any service plan. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
I have a normal AT&T Cat-1 data plan and I am able to send a text no problem using the documented MicroPython, API Mode, and Transparent mode methods. It sounds like you will need a different data plan to meet your requirements.

Which module and cellular plan are you using, I believe that's pretty important in the what works/what doesn't conversation.
A SimCom Sim7000A cellular module (not XBee... I still don't really know what XBee is) works with Hologram.io's plan, but each SMS costs 19 cents. Botletics makes an arduino shield for the SIM7000A and there are some low cost breakout boards available as well. And C++ libraries which make the SIM7000A easier to work with.
@DigiFan23 - is it the Trio data plan? I'm looking at https://marketplace.att.com/products/att-iot-dataplans-lte-m-us which says nothing about SMS.
Thanks-

I corrected my mistake. The SIM I use it technically a Cat-1 capable SIM.
Cool, do you know what brand / model SIM it is?
It is a private MVNO that uses the AT&T network.
ah ok, thank you-
