File System Mapping Between Digi Remote Manager and DAL Devices

Introduction

The folder structure shown in Digi Remote Manager is not the same as the filesystem structure visible when logging into the DAL device's local Web UI (or SSH/console) directly. Digi Remote Manager presents a simplified, renamed view of a specific subset of the device's filesystem, that is not a mirror of the local file browser.

This guide documents that mapping, clarifying where files uploaded via Digi Remote Manager actually reside on the device's local UI or shell.

Issue

Where does a file uploaded via Digi Remote Manager actually end up on the device, and which Digi Remote Manager folder should be used to place a file at a specific local path?

Solution

Digi Remote Manager's top-level folders map to fixed, specific paths on the DAL device. Once this mapping is known, it becomes possible to reliably predict — in both directions — where a file uploaded via Digi Remote Manager will land locally, and which Digi Remote Manager folder corresponds to a given local path.

Digi Remote Manager folder → DAL local path mapping:

Digi Remote Manager File System folder

DAL local filesystem path (visible on local Web UI / shell)

analyzer

/etc/config/analyzer/

applications

/etc/config/scripts/

hotspots

/etc/config/hotspot/

serial

/etc/config/serial/

persistent files

/opt/

logs

/var/log/

Example: uploading a file and finding it on the device

  1. In Digi Remote Manager, open the device's detail page and go to the Files tab. The top-level folders (analyzer, applications, serial, persistent files, logs) are listed:

2. Navigate into the applications folder and upload a file — in this case test_file.py. Digi Remote Manager confirms "File(s) successfully uploaded" and the file appears listed under applications.

3. On the device's own local Web UI, under File System, the same file appears — but under the path //etc/config/scripts, not under a folder called applications:

This confirms the mapping: the applications folder in Digi Remote Manager corresponds to /etc/config/scripts/ on the device.

Notes:

  • Templates use the same folder structure and mapping, but files are not imported from a model device — the folder structure and files must be recreated manually within the Template's File System component.
  • Symlinks: DAL provides symlinks for all of the mapped directories above except persistent files, so once shell access to the device is available, the underlying path doesn't need to be memorized — either name resolves to the same location.

Example, on the device:

# ls -ld /applications

lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            18 Aug 14 07:46 /applications -> etc/config/scripts

So /applications/ and /etc/config/scripts/ refer to the same location.
