The following lists the various numbers the major carriers need to activate a device or SIM card on their network:
Verizon
2G - ESN/MEID
3G - ESN/MEID
4G - IMEI
Sprint
2G - ESN/MEID
3G - ESN/MEID
4G - MEID
AT&T, T-Mobile & Other GSM Carriers
Most GSM based carriers do not require to pair a SIM card with the IMEI number on the devices.
Some carriers may require the IMEI number, and those SIM cards will likely be paired to that IMEI if this is required.
Check with the service provider if they need the IMEI number or not when setting up a new GSM device.
