"Modem Configuration file not found" error seen when using XCTU or XCTU-NG

Introduction:

Occasionally, a "Modem Configuration file not found" error is seen when using the XCTU (or XCTU-NG) software.  What this generally indicates is that the firmware on the module you're trying to communicate with isn't available in your local copy of the software.

Note:  The following guidance will use the term "XCTU" when applicable to both versions of the software, and will specify XCTU or XCTU-NG where those instructions differ.

The firmware files which "XCTU" uses can be imported from within the software itself, by utilizing one of the following methods.

XCTU (old version) instructions:
  1. Open XCTU, then go to the Modem Configuration tab
  2. Select the button for "Download new versions".
  3. Select "Web" for the Update Source
  4. When the download is complete, an "Update Summary" screen will pop up.  Verify the new versions which were installed, then select "OK" when ready to continue.
  5. Select "Done" to complete the import.
The modem firmware files which XCTU uses will be downloaded to your hard drive at the following path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Digi\XCTU\update

XCTU-NG (new version) instructions:
  1. Open XCTU-NG, then click the ? (Help) icon
  2. Select "Update the Radio Firmware Library"
  3. Select "Remote Server"
  4. Select "OK"
  5. A "Checking for Radio Firmware Library updates" screen will pop-up, then disappear when the import is complete.
The modem firmware files which XCTU-NG uses will be downloaded to your hard drive at the following path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Digi\XCTU-NG\radio_firmwares

Note:  The site where "XCTU" downloads firmware from can be accessed directly by clicking here, if a firmware .zip file is needed.  The folder tree is arranged by product and/or radio type.

What if I'm still seeing the error after importing the firmware within the software?

If you're still seeing the "Modem Configuration file not found" error at this point, it likely means that your particular device is using a version of firmware which isn't available yet (or is missing) from the download site.

For this reason, "XCTU" supports a manual method which can be used to import firmware from a firmware .zip file like the ones available on the Technical Support website.  This method is especially useful when Digi personnel send out
a pre-release version of modem firmware, in order to test for a new feature or bug fix prior to release.

XCTU instructions:
  1. Open XCTU, then go to the Modem Configuration tab
  2. Click the button for "Download new versions"
  3. Select "File" for the Update Source
  4. Browse to the directory where the firmware .zip file is located, then select "Open"
  5. When the download is complete, an "Update Summary" screen will pop up.  Verify the new versions which were installed, and click OK when ready to continue.
  6. Click "Done" to finish the import.

XCTU-NG instructions:
  1. Open XCTU-NG, then click the ? (Help) icon dropdown
  2. Select "Update the Radio Firmware Library"
  3. Select "Local File"
  4. Select "Browse", then find the directory where the firmware .zip file is located
  5. Select the file, then Open (the path to the file will be shown)
  6. Select "OK"
  7. A "Checking for Radio Firmware Library updates" screen will pop-up, then a "Installed radio firmware" screen will show any firmware versions which were just installed.
  8. Select "OK" when ready to continue (pop up window disappears).
