Eliminating Data Blind Spots in LNG Terminal Operations with MQTT and Private 5G

Feb 24, 2026 | Length: 46:45

Many facilities still struggle with coverage gaps and limited bandwidth that restrict real-time visibility. This on-demand webinar explores how liquid natural gas (LNG) terminal operators can eliminate data blind spots to improve safety, streamline operations and maintain 24/7 performance.

Experts from Digi International, Celona and AUTOSOL discuss how private 5G and advanced SCADA communications enable secure, low-latency data collection across the terminal from inlet metering to ship loading while connecting legacy systems with unified, real-time data delivery.

Are most LNG operators expanding existing terminals or building new ones? Is it more brownfield or greenfield?

Answer (Steve):

Yeah, I can jump in, because I'm typically in the middle of this when we do our proposals. There’s a reason they had LNG World, or something to that effect, two weeks ago in Doha. QatarEnergy is essentially doing both simultaneously. They’re massively expanding existing facilities, and they’re building a new facility in what they call the North Field. This is going to be a massive facility.

In the U.S., Sabine Pass is expanding. My understanding is they’re adding a mid-scale train in Corpus Christi. Another facility coming online is Golden Pass. We’re potentially doing some work in Mozambique — another LNG facility that stopped construction due to safety challenges and has now restarted because of global demand.

So, there’s a lot of expansion and new construction. That’s why you’re seeing such a dramatic uptick in capacity year over year. As we discussed in this webinar, operators need solutions that work in both brownfield and greenfield environments. Now there is a very resilient and deterministic wireless technology that allows facilities to come online faster. Ultimately, it comes down to time to first gas.

Answer (Andrew):

I would say 60% to 70% of what I’m involved in is brownfield, where we’re building onto an existing facility, but they may be doubling capacity. It’s kind of a gray area. They may acquire another 10 acres and consider it greenfield, but it’s right next to the brownfield facility.

If you’re going to do it, don’t just put a toe in the water and halfway do it. Do it correctly and bring all these systems together. Otherwise, you’ll be managing an old brownfield plant using legacy systems next to a new facility with modern systems. It’s better to approach it as a consolidated effort. You can phase it out, but you need consolidation of your communications and your data acquisition — how you’re collecting it via AUTOSOL. That’s how I explain it.

I’ll add one more thing. When you’re doing this, ask yourself what the business-related outcome is. What is the end result you want? If you have that clear vision, we can support that vision and help you get there. Don’t just say, “I need communications,” or “I want to do MQTT because everyone else is doing it.” Ask yourself why.
