Digi® EX15 LTE cellular extenders offer gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity for retailers and other organizations that cannot tolerate network downtime and the negative impact on revenue streams and brand reputation.

A suite of Digi upgradeable CORE plug-in LTE modems lets users select the cellular speeds that best fit their business requirements, including LTE-advanced (Cat 6) for data-intensive applications.

Couple Digi EX15 with a dedicated wireline connection to ensure dual ISP connectivity, maximum uptime and complete business continuity for devices that must be “always up,” such as mobile kiosks, digital signs and POS systems.

You can use Digi EX15 for primary LTE connectivity as well, while the serial port can be used to provide out-of-band (OOB) management for remote off-premise equipment.

Does the Digi EX15 support EV-DO on the Verizon network?

Yes, the Digi EX15 comes with a CAT3 LTE plug-in modem that supports EV-DO on the Verizon network.

Is the Digi EX15 certified for use outside of the United States?

Yes, the Digi EX15 is certified for use in the United States and Canada.

Local Device Management/Access

How do I use the optional battery pack for site survey, and what port on the Digi EX15 is the optional PoE enabled?

During a site survey it is useful to use the battery pack instead of the power supply unit to power the Digi EX15. The battery pack will power your device for approximately two hours while you perform your site survey. After the optimal location has been determined, remove the battery pack and connect either the main power supply unit or optional PoE injector cable for remote power. LAN port 1 is the only PoE-enabled Ethernet port on the Digi EX15, which can be connected to your client device for power.

How do I access the local UI of the Digi EX15 using DHCP?

  1. Using a standard Ethernet cable, connect your Windows or Mac PC Ethernet port to the LAN Ethernet port of the device.
  2. Wait approximately one minute for your PC to recognize and communicate with the DHCP server in your Digi device.
  3. Enter the destination http://192.168.210.1 in your browser.
    1. Your browser may give you a warning that the site is insecure because your Digi device uses a self-signed security certificate.
    2. Click the option to continue to the site.
    3. If you receive an error that the destination was not reachable, your device may be running an older version of our device firmware. See the instructions below to connect using a static IP address.

How do I access the local UI of the Digi EX15 using a Static IP address?

  1. If your device is running device firmware prior to 16.11.142, to manually connect to the device, you must manually set an IP address on your PC to be able to communicate with the Digi EX15. First, select the Properties of the relevant network connection on your PC.
  2. Click the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) parameter and select Properties and configure with the following details.
  3. Enter the destination: http://192.168.210.1 in your browser and hit Enter.
    1. Your browser may give you a warning that the site is insecure because your Digi device uses a self-signed security certificate.
    2. Click the option to continue to the site.
  4. Logon to the device using the default account:

What is an APN?

Each carrier has a set of default Access Point Names (APNs) for their network. Digi automatically attempts connection using the below default APNs. If your carrier has provided you with a custom APN, you will need to configure the device to connect to the custom APN. Refer to the question below "How do I configure a custom APN?" for more information.

How do I configure a custom APN?

  1. Power on your Digi EX15.
  2. Using a standard Ethernet cable, connect your Windows or Mac PC Ethernet port to the LAN Ethernet port of the device.
  3. Wait approximately one minute for your PC to recognize and communicate with the DHCP server in your Digi device.
  4. Enter the destination http://192.168.210.1 in your browser.
    1. Your browser may give you a warning that the site is insecure because your Digi device uses a self-signed security certificate.
    2. Click the option to continue to the site.

How do I upgrade the firmware of the Digi EX15?

  1. Download the appropriate firmware file.
  2. Power on your Digi EX15.
  3. Using a standard Ethernet cable, connect your Windows or Mac PC Ethernet port to the LAN Ethernet port of the device.
  4. Wait approximately one minute for your PC to recognize and communicate with the DHCP server in your Digi device.
  5. Enter the destination http://192.168.210.1 in your browser.
    1. Your browser may give you a warning that the site is insecure because your Digi device uses a self-signed security certificate.
    2. Click the option to continue to the site.
    3. If you receive an error that the destination was not reachable, your device may be running an older version of our device firmware. See the instructions to connect to the local UI using a static IP address then continue with Step 7 below.
  6. Logon to the device using the default account:
    • The default password is located on the bottom of the device.
  7. Select the System tab on the left side of the page.
  8. Select the Browse button next to the Firmware image section.
  9. Browse for and select the firmware file downloaded in Step 1 above.
  10. Click the Update Firmware button. Do not turn off or unplug the device while it is upgrading its firmware. The upgrade process should take less than one minute.
  11. IMPORTANT: If you will be using Digi aView to manage your device, any configuration settings in Digi aView take precedence over any settings configured manually using the Local UI. You must also configure your custom APN in Digi aView. Please refer to the Digi aView User’s Guide for more information.

What if I change my cellular carrier? How do I update the modem firmware of the of the Digi EX15 to use a different cellular carrier (e.g. AT&T to Verizon)?

This happens automatically with our Carrier Smart Select feature. When you insert the new carrier SIM, it will take approximately two to three minutes for the modem firmware to be updated.

My Digi EX15 can't connect, what should I do?

If the LED of your Digi EX15 is flashing white and remains flashing white for more than two minutes, your Digi EX15 is having difficulty connecting to your carrier’s cellular network.

  1. Power off the Digi EX15. Remove the Digi CORE 1002-CM plug-in LTE modem and check that the SIM card is fully inserted in the SIM slot.
  2. Re-insert the Digi CORE 1002-CM back into the Digi EX15.
  3. Check the signal strength LEDs on the Digi EX15.
    1. If none of the five signal LEDs ever illuminate on the Digi EX15, even after waiting a few minutes once the status LED is flashing white, the Digi EX15 may be unable to read the SIM card, contact your cellular carrier and confirm the SIM card is valid and active.
  4. Attempt to connect using an alternate SIM card
    1. If the Digi EX15 does not work with an alternative SIM card, and none of the signal strength LEDs illuminate, contact Digi support to verify if an RMA/Return is required.

If you have at least one signal strength bar illuminated, this indicates the Digi EX15 is able to detect the SIM card's presence, but if the status LED continues to flash white for more than two minutes, it is having difficulty using the SIM card to establish a cellular connection.

  1. Ensure the SIM card does not have a custom APN configured. If the SIM card requires a custom or non-standard APN to connect, you will need to configure the Digi EX15 to use that custom APN. Refer to the FAQ for How do I configure a custom APN?
  2. Try connecting the SIM card to another device (USB modem, phone, etc.). If it connects with the other device, observe what settings the device used to establish the connection, in particular the APN used. If this differs than the standard APN for the carrier, please configure this APN into the Digi EX15; refer to the FAQ How do I configure a custom APN? section above.

Tracking Cellular Data Usage

How much cellular data is used for status and logging operations of the Digi EX15?

Monthly usage without an IPSec tunnel enabled is between 1.8 MB - 2MB including startup activities performed a single time at device installation.

Monthly usage with an IPSec tunnel enabled is between 30-120MB depending on device settings.

If your plan provides for limited cellular data, contact Digi Support for assistance configuring your devices to minimize cellular data usage.

Can I track cellular usage of my devices?

Cellular data usage is tracked using the Digi cloud based device management system, Digi aView. Refer to the Data Plan section of the Digi aView User's Guide for details on how to setup cellular usage tracking.

How quickly will a device send cellular usage updates to Digi aView?

The usage chart within Digi aView first updates within thirty minutes of first powering on the Digi EX15. Then, the Digi EX15 sends a status update once every thirty minutes to Digi aView.

Can I set alerts to track cellular data usage?

Using the Digi aView management site, alerts can be generated if a device exceeds a specified data usage limit per month. Additionally, pooled data plans and group overage notifications can be setup to generate alerts if a group of devices exceed a specified data usage limit per month.

How quickly will I receive a cellular data group overage notification?

A group quota overage notification is sent within one hour of exceeding the specified data limit. However, it only sends the group data plan notification to users that are in the same Digi aView organization as the data plan.

How do I see the usage of all the devices belonging to a plan?

To view the usage of all units belonging to a plan, generate a Cellular Utilization report, which will list the utilization for all devices in a desired organization. You can find the Cellular Utilization report under the Reports drop-down on the navigation bar on the left side of the Digi aView management site. This will generate a Cellular Utilization report for all the devices in the selected organization, not just those assigned to a particular data plan. To view just the devices assigned to a particular data plan, click on the data plan name on the organization details page, under the Data Plans tab.

Can I export the data usage graph?

The ability to export the raw data from the usage graph is currently not available. You can only export the data usage graph to an image format (png, jpeg, etc.) or as a PDF.
