How Private Wireless Networks are Revolutionizing Manufacturing

May 19, 2023 | Length: 47:46

Today the use cases in manufacturing are growing, with increasing requirements for high-speed, reliable and secure wireless connectivity. More and more manufacturing outfits are turning to private wireless networks as an answer.

In this recorded webinar, we discuss how private networks differ from public networks, and how you use private wireless in manufacturing to address requirements like the speed and reliability required for Industry 4.0. You’ll also learn how Digi collaborates with technology partners like Celona, and how Digi cellular routers and Digi Remote Manager® provide an excellent, seamless solution for the implementation of private wireless networks.

Follow-up Webinar Q&A

Thank you again for attending our session on private wireless networks with Digi and Celona. Here are the questions that followed the presentation and their answers. If you have additional questions, be sure to reach out.

Moderator: Greg Yatman, Senior Director of Growth Marketing, Celona

Presenters:

  • Pradhyum Ramkumar, Senior Director, Product Marketing, Celona
  • Curt Ahart, VP of Business Development, Digi International

Regarding Digi Remote Manager and the Celona Orchestrator, can they talk together, and is there a future single-pane capability planned?

Curt: That's a great question. Today, Digi Remote Manager has, and always has had, a great set of APIs for integration with other platforms. We have a number of customers that provide turnkey solutions, where they have a single pane of glass, and behind their application are APIs that are working with Digi Remote Manager to manage and monitor the Digi devices. We see this as kind of a next step to getting closer. In fact, a group of our executives and the Celona executives are meeting at Celona's headquarters in a couple of weeks. And I think this is one of our topics of discussion. So, stay tuned.

Pradhyum: Celona is also an API-first platform, so whatever we have on Orchestrator is available through API. So, it's one thing whether we integrate into the customer's dashboard overall, or whether we integrate the Digi dashboard. But the good news is they're all API-driven, and can be easily managed.

The question is around implementation of these systems in this Industry 4.0 application. Is there any one use case in particular or any examples that the team here would like to give around how they're being implemented in the real world?

Curt: I think you can see that we have a lot of examples around AGV. I don't know if we can talk specifically about who those customers are. As I shared, the things that we're seeing are the AGVs and the machine vision, visual inspection. The thing that we haven't seen yet in the real world is the use of PLCs. And that's kind of the next step in the journey of maturation of private cellular and manufacturing.

The next question is around private wireless and how it plays with other legacy applications platforms, so Wi-Fi, BLE, cellular, etc. Is that happening now? Does it work presently? Can they remain in the environment, or are there changes that need to happen?

Curt: Our regulatory bodies do a really good job of managing spectrum. One of the things that you'll see is they're all operating in different frequency bands for the most part. Particularly, CBRS band 48 is kind of like its own world. Wi-Fi has 2 Gigahertz, 4 Gigahertz, and 5 Gigahertz, which are more crowded spaces. But we haven't seen any interference issues with other networks with private cellular networks to date, that I'm aware of.

How can attendees continue the conversation?

Greg: Please do reach out to either the Digi team, via their Contact Us page, or reach the Celona team via their Contact page. Curt and Pradhyum, and also Harald Remmert, who hasn't been speaking but has answered some questions here, are all on LinkedIn, and of course you can follow Digi on LinkedIn, and Celona on LinkedIn.
