General & Overview

What is the Digi Connect Sensor XRT-M?

The Digi Connect Sensor XRT-M is a rugged, battery-powered cellular IoT gateway designed for remote monitoring in industrial environments. It connects to field sensors via analog, digital, and Modbus interfaces and transmits data to Digi Axess or directly to any MQTT broker. It is deployed across water/wastewater, oil and gas, environmental monitoring, and industrial automation applications.

What problems does the Digi Connect Sensor XRT-M solve?

It eliminates the cost and complexity of running wired infrastructure to remote monitoring points. With up to 5-year battery life and cellular connectivity, it enables cost-effective monitoring in locations where power and network infrastructure are unavailable—reducing truck rolls, manual reads, and missed compliance events.

What are the two main hardware variants?

CSENSE-M110: IP30-rated DIN-rail mountable module powered by mains (no enclosure included). CSENSE-M210: IP68/NEMA 6P-rated enclosure with mains or battery power, includes batteries and internal antenna—ideal for outdoor and hazardous environments. CSENSE-M210-N is identical to M210 but ships without batteries.

What industries use the Digi Connect Sensor XRT-M?

Water and wastewater utilities (pressure, flow, water quality), oil and gas (pipeline and tank monitoring), industrial automation (factory floor sensing), environmental regulatory compliance, agriculture, green stormwater infrastructure, and mining operations.

Has the XRT-M won any industry awards?

Yes. The XRT-M received the 2024 IoT Excellence Award, the 2025 IoT Evolution Product of the Year Award, and the 2026 IoT Evolution Asset Tracking Award. It was also recognized with T-Mobile network certification in 2024.

Connectivity & Protocols

What cellular technology does the XRT-M use?

Dual-mode LTE-M and NB-IoT with global band support (4G: B1-B5, B8, B12-B13, B18-B20, B25-B28, B66, B71, B85; 2G: B2, B3, B5, B8) and one standard SIM slot (2FF).

Does the XRT-M support MQTT?

Yes. The XRT-M supports native MQTT and can publish data directly to any MQTT broker or to Digi Axess simultaneously. This makes it cloud-agnostic and easy to integrate with existing IIoT platforms.

What sensor protocols are supported?

Modbus RTU and ASCII (up to 4 Modbus sensors). Analog: 4 configurable inputs as 4-20 mA current loop or 0-10 VDC. Digital: 1 digital input or pulse counter (up to 2 kHz). Output power: 6 ports at 3.3V, 5V, 15V, or 24 VDC (200 mA max) to power connected sensors.

Can the XRT-M power my sensors?

Yes. Each of the 4 analog inputs has a user-enabled power output port (6 total), providing configurable DC voltage (3.3V, 5V, 15V, or 24 VDC at up to 200 mA) to power industry-standard sensors directly from the device.

Does the XRT-M support GPS or location services?

GPS location is not listed in the XRT-M specification. Location visibility is available at the asset level via the Digi Axess platform through map and aerial views tied to device registration.

Power & Battery

How long does the battery last on the XRT-M?

Approximately 5 years at 2 reads/transmits per day using dual 7.2V, 12 Ah lithium thionyl chloride batteries. Sleeping power draw is just 115 microwatts, making it ideal for remote, power-scarce locations.

Are the batteries rechargeable?

No. The batteries are non-rechargeable lithium thionyl chloride cells, but they are replaceable. Replacement batteries are available as accessories (SKUs 76002149 single or 76002150 2-pack).

Can the XRT-M run on mains power?

Yes. Both M110 and M210 models support 9-30 VDC external power. The M210 can operate on mains power, battery power, or both simultaneously for maximum flexibility.

What is the battery storage life?

Less than 1% battery discharge per year when stored at 30°C (86°F). Storage temperature range is -40°C to 85°C.

Environmental & Certifications

What are the operating temperature limits for the XRT-M?

-35°C to 70°C (-31°F to 158°F) operating; -40°C to 85°C storage. This wide range makes it suitable for outdoor industrial environments including harsh climates.

Is the XRT-M rated for hazardous locations?

Yes. The M210 enclosure model carries UL Class 1 Division 2 certification (with corresponding Canadian certifications), EN IEC 60079-0:2018, and EN 60079-15:2010, making it suitable for Class I and II Division 2 and Class III hazardous locations.

What is the IP rating of the two enclosure options?

M110 (DIN-rail module): IP30. M210 (NEMA enclosure): IP68 and NEMA 6P—rated for complete submersion protection, suitable for outdoor and wet environments.

What safety certifications does the XRT-M hold?

UL 60950-22, UL/IEC/EN 62368-1:2014/A11:2017, CSA 22.2, UL 121201 & CSA C22.2 No. 213-17 (hazardous locations), FCC Part 15 Class B, IC/ICES-003, EN 301489-1, EN 301489-17, EN 55035, T-Mobile certified. Visit digi.com/resources/certifications for the latest list.

Management & Software

How is the XRT-M managed?

The XRT-M is managed via Digi Axess—a cloud-based platform available at digiaxess.com—with web UI and a mobile app (iOS and Android). It provides dashboards, map views, alerts, alarms, reports, and sensor configuration. No local PC or proprietary controller is required.

Can the XRT-M publish data to a third-party MQTT broker without Digi Axess?

Yes. The XRT-M supports direct-to-broker MQTT publishing independent of Digi Axess. It can also publish to both Digi Axess and a third-party broker simultaneously.

What does the first year of Digi Axess include?

Hardware purchase includes the first-year Digi Axess subscription and cellular data plan. After year one, a low-cost annual Digi Axess subscription and cellular service are required. See digi.com/support/professional-services/managed-connectivity-services for data plan pricing.

How quickly can I deploy an XRT-M and start receiving data?

Setup is designed to be completed in under 10 minutes. The XRT-M uses preloaded configurations and Digi Axess for zero-touch provisioning.
