How to install a serial modem with an Edgeport

Assumptions:

  • Edgeport driver 5.70 (or newer) is installed.
  • The serial modem supports Plug&Play.

Instructions:

  1. Launch the Edgeport Configuration Utility.
  2. Select the Edgeport within the General tab.
  3. Click the Port Flags button on the right.
  4. Ensure the "Disable Plug&Play" checkbox on the far right is Unchecked.
  5. Click the Update button at the top right.
  6. Click OK to close the Edgeport Configuration Utility.

Windows should now detect the serial modem via Plug&Play and automatically install the proper driver.  If the modem is not detected, perform a "Scan for Hardware Changes" in Windows Device Manager.

The modem should be accessible via the COM port number that corresponds to the serial port number of the Edgeport that it's attached to.  For example, if the modem is attached to serial port #2 of a 4-port Edgeport, then it would be accessible via whatever COM port number corresponds to serial port #2.  COM port assignments are determined by double-clicking (expanding) the Edgeport within the General tab of the Edgeport Configuration Utility.  In the case of the Edgeport/1 unit, since it only has one serial port (therefore one COM port), the modem would be accessible on whatever COM port is associated with the Edgeport/1.

Troubleshooting:

  1. If feasible, connect the serial modem directly to a computer's native (onboard) serial port, to ensure it works in that scenario.
  2. Edgeport serial ports are DTE, so a straight through serial cable should be used to connect the modem to the Edgeport (the same cable used to connect to a computer's native serial port).
  3. Some serial modems have physical DIP switches. If the modem is not working as expected, i.e. not detected or not working post-installation, change the DIP switches to the default settings to see if that helps.
